2021 Game Results
The years 2020 and 2021 were significant in world and Little League history. The COVID pandemic that began in 2020 required us to shut our doors for the first time since we began operating in 1952. National, state, and local authorities, as well as Little League headquarters would not let us play. In 2021, Little League and our governor's office gave us approval to resume. However, our local authorities would not follow suit until we came with a set of COVID protocols to keep all participants safe. We complied by coming up with protocols that included masks, practice limitations, and extra sanitization safeguards. We also required temperature checks and health questionnaires before every game as an extra step in the process.
In addition to these changes, we found ourselves as one of only a few leagues who conducted a season in our District 24 region. As such, we were allowed to register players from anywhere in Brownsville without consideration for normal zoning requirements. Because of this temporary expansion, we registered nearly 700 players and had 55 teams in all of our divisions combined, both representing all-time records in our league's history.
For post season Allstar play, we also set records by entering seven Allstar teams; Softball - Minor's, Major's Junior's, Baseball - 9/10 Year Olds, 11 Year Olds, 12 Year Olds, and Junior's. Six of these teams advanced to the Sectional Tournament with two advancing to the State Tournament; Minor's and Junior's Softball. Both of these teams made it to the final game at the state championship, but came up short ending up as State Champ Runner-ups.
The year 2021 also saw us begin our area's first-ever Little League Challenger Division for children with special needs. We had approximately 50 players sign up for this first year of play despite the pandemic risks that were still in play. Watching the smiles of these kids faces was the true highlight of the entire 2021 season despite all of the other records that were achieved.
